He soon becomes convinced that nothing has changed here in the years of his absence: the factory owners still wallow in luxury, squandering money on gambling, banquets and mistresses. The workers still drag out a miserable, impoverished existence. Their exploitation has been brought to extreme limits - there are no schools, hospitals, no safety equipment - people are dying, and their families are evicted from their homes.
