With an estimated budget of $80 million, the project, which was first conceived at Universal, is among the largest initiatives in the market.
One of Will Smith's upcoming projects is a crime thriller called Sugar Bandits, in which he will play an Iraq War veteran.
Smith is set to play a former Special Forces soldier who joins an elite group of vigilantes out to end the drug trade in Boston, according to Deadline.

Decider

But in what is regarded as one of the most talked-about packages to come out of the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin, things are not as they seem. The project really started out at Universal Pictures a few years ago, with Joe Carnahan slated to direct.

However, it has since changed course and is now being released in independent theatres.
Smith will have a supporting role in the movie rather than the protagonist, despite the influence that comes with his name.

Although a director is not yet attached, buyers who are interested in taking on the movie are showing a great deal of interest in the film's material.

Smith's last released picture was Emancipation in 2022, which Apple paid $130 million to buy for their streaming service.

The book and screenplay Devils in Exile by Chuck Hogan, who also penned Prince of Thieves in 2004 and The Town, a 2010 crime thriller helmed by Ben Affleck, served as the inspiration for Sugar Bandits.

Along with Ryan Shimazaki, Smith and Jon Mone will produce the movie through Westbrook Studios. Stuart Ford will produce and finance the film on behalf of AGC Studios, while Richard Abate will represent 3 Arts Entertainment.

Will Smith appears to be setting the groundwork for a possible 2020 Oscar slap incident return.

That night, the actor, who was barred from the Academy for ten years as a result of the incident, won the Best Actor award for King Richard, and he later started working to rebuild his career.

Some of that was simply stepping away from the limelight, but other actions included returning to work on a beloved property.
In the now in post-production Bad Boys 4, Smith will return with Martin Lawrene.

The movie comes after 2020's Bad Boys for Life, which went on to become the franchise's most financially successful outing and the third-highest-grossing January release ever, with a $426.5 million global total.
